The 6 levels of personal branding: the Korczowski scale, from the founder nobody knows to a name carried for centuries, and how to climb each type.

In 1964 an astronomer ranked civilizations by the energy they control. This scale ranks founders by how far their ideas travel when they are not in the room. Six types, from Type 0 to the legends of Type 5, a two-minute self-test, a lookup that scores any public name or your family legacy up to the limit of 6.00, the trap of each type and the move to the next one, with a prompt for your AI at every step.

TL;DR

A personal brand grows in types, and each type is measured by how far your ideas travel when you are not in the room. Type 0: you have no time, so your ideas stay in your head and your meetings. Type 1: you post with discipline on one platform and sit in the 300-view jail, which feels like a waste of time and is the entry fee. Type 2: content starts paying in DMs, first deals and investor intros, one format is recognized as yours, and a team of one or two helps. Type 3: you become the face of your industry, a full-time team produces, and your company grows with or without you. Type 4: a generational public figure whose audience follows across industries. Type 5: a legend whose ideas are still carried centuries after their death, like the Buddha, Jesus, Socrates or Napoleon, and the only type nobody reaches alive. The first half of the scale measures a personal brand; the second half measures a legacy. Every person gets one continuous score, and 6.00 is the limit nobody reaches: an idea carried by every human who ever lived. Type any public name below, or score yourself and the people of your family. If you are reading this, you probably sit between 0 and 1. The climb from 1 to 2 is the one that changes a company, and it takes a system more than talent, which the Creative-Led Growth Handbook gives you.

Self-test

Find your exact number in two minutes.

Tick what is true today, with proof you could show. You reach a type when you tick at least three of its four lines and the type below it. The lines you tick in the next type give your decimals, the way astronomers say humanity sits at about 0.7 on the Kardashev scale. The test stops at Type 4: Type 5 is only reached after death.

Type 4

Wikipedia's rules for people: notability guideline.

Your Korczowski score: Type 0.

Score any name

Your personal brand, a public figure, or your family legacy: one number, up to the limit of 6.00.

The lookup searches the web and reads what an AI already knows, answers the same checks as the self-test, estimates the audience, and for the dead, how long and by how many people their ideas are still carried. The score is then computed by a fixed formula, the same one used for every example below, and every input is shown so you can check it.

Searches are logged to document the scale: the name searched, the score, the date and the country. No IP address and no account. Private individuals are not looked up and their names are not kept (privacy).

Your personal legacy, or your family's

For yourself, a parent, a grandparent or a teacher, nothing is searched online: you bring the evidence, the same formula does the rest. Nothing you type here leaves your browser except the final score, logged without any name.

Type 1
Type 2
Type 3
Type 4
How the number is computed
  1. Evidence. The highest type whose checks pass (3 of 4, and every type below), plus a quarter for each check of the next type. This is the self-test above, written so it works for a monk, a professor or a TikToker.
  2. Audience. Where the audience sits inside the band of each type, on a log scale: Type 0 from 10 to 300, Type 1 from 300 to 10,000, Type 2 from 10,000 to 100,000, Type 3 from 100,000 to 5 million, Type 4 from 5 million to 1 billion.
  3. The lower of the two wins. Followers without results stay low, and results without reach stay low too.
  4. Type 5, after death only. If ideas are still carried a hundred years or more after death and three of four legend checks pass: 5 + 0.5 x depth + 0.5 x reach, on log scales. Depth counts people, not years: the share of the humans ever born who were born after the death, from PRB's table, on a log scale from 0 at a century (about 10% of all births) to 1 at all of human history. Reach runs from 0 at one million living carriers to 1 at eight billion, all of humanity.
  5. 6.00, the limit. Both at 1: an idea carried by every generation and every living person, the roughly 117 billion humans ever born (PRB). It is a limit, not a level: no person reaches it.

Rows marked est. rely on an estimate where no census exists: they are the weakest numbers on the page, and moving one of them by a factor of ten moves a Type 5 score by about 0.13.

The six types

What each type looks like from the inside, and the move to the next one.

T0

Type 0: The Invisible Expert

Your head and your meetings · A few hundred at most · team: nobody

You have the knowledge, the opinions and often the results. You have no time to work on your brand, so you post twice a year, usually a company announcement. Your best thinking is spoken in sales calls, board meetings and dinners, and it dies there.

How it feels. It feels safe and slightly guilty. You know you should, everyone tells you to, and it stays on the list under the things that feel more urgent this week.

The trap

"Later, when things calm down."

How to reach Type 1

Pick one platform, one hour a day and ninety days. Decide the rhythm before the topics.

Steps
  1. Pick the one platform where your buyer already spends time, and ignore the others for ninety days.
  2. Block one hour a day in your calendar, the same hour every day, as you would for a customer meeting.
  3. Write down 30 questions your customers, candidates or investors asked you this quarter. Each one is a post.
  4. Record or write in batches: one session gives a week of posts.
  5. Commit to three posts a week minimum for ninety days, and judge nothing before day 90.
TodayWrite the ten questions your customers asked you this month.
For your AI

Copy this prompt into your assistant:

I am a founder with almost no public content. My company: [what you sell, to whom]. My buyer spends time on: [platforms]. Here are questions customers, candidates and investors asked me recently: [paste]. Pick the one platform I should start on and say why in two sentences. Turn the questions into 30 post ideas in my words, grouped by the belief each one builds in a buyer, and give me a 90-day rhythm I can hold with one hour a day.

T1

Type 1: The Grinder

Your followers, sometimes · Under 10,000 · team: you, alone

You produce content in a repetitive and systematic way on one platform. Most posts stop at a few hundred views, what creators call the 300-view jail. Content is real work and still a low priority: no full-time team, volume first, quality uneven.

How it feels. This is the stage where producing feels bad. You spend hours, the numbers stay flat, and every week a voice says it is a waste of time. It is the price of the data you need for Type 2.

The trap

Quitting inside the 300-view jail

How to reach Type 2

The 300-view jail is a packaging problem. Treat formats as dice, keep the ones that beat your median, and add a second pair of hands.

Steps
  1. Log every post with its views at day 7, so you compare videos at the same age.
  2. Find your median. Mark every post above twice the median and look for what they share: the hook, the format, the topic.
  3. Turn the winner into a format with a name and a fixed structure, and produce it in series. A format people recognize is the first sign of Type 2.
  4. Change one thing at a time on your weaker formats, and drop the ones that stay under the median after ten tries.
  5. Hire your first helper, an editor or an assistant, so your hour goes to ideas and to the camera.
TodayList your last 20 posts with their views at day 7 and circle the three best.
For your AI

Copy this prompt into your assistant:

Here are my last 20 to 40 posts with views at day 7, likes, shares, saves and the first line of each: [paste]. Compute my median. List the posts above twice the median and what they share (hook, format, topic, length). Propose one named format I can produce in series, the structure of that format, and three variants to test this month. Then tell me which formats to drop.

T2

Type 2: The Niche Authority

Your niche · 10,000 to 100,000 · team: 1 or 2 people

Content yields real dividends: DMs from buyers, first deals, investors who reach out first. You can repeat above-median results with a known format, and at least one format and one idea are recognized as yours. A small team of one or two people produces, including ads and a VSL cut from your best organic videos. Posting is daily and scheduled, niche podcasts invite you, and you may run a few sub-accounts.

How it feels. It is fun, because results show up, and still uneven: some weeks are underwhelming, and the wins depend on you showing up every day. This is the right time to recruit a head of content.

The trap

Stopping here: it fades in a few years

How to reach Type 3

Move from rented attention to owned ideas. Your industry has to adopt your vocabulary, and a team has to carry the production.

Steps
  1. Recruit a head of content who owns the calendar, the team and the numbers, so you only bring ideas, presence and decisions.
  2. Name your big idea: one concept, one framework, one word your industry can repeat. Repeat it in every format for a year.
  3. Climb the stage ladder: niche podcasts, then industry podcasts, then events and press outside your niche.
  4. Turn your proven organic videos into ads and a VSL, so the best ideas keep working while you sleep.
  5. Open sub-accounts for clips, other languages or other platforms, each with its own format.
TodayWrite the one idea you want your industry to repeat about you, in one sentence.
For your AI

Copy this prompt into your assistant:

I am at Type 2 of the Korczowski scale: [followers, platforms, what content already brings me in deals, DMs, intros]. My team: [who does what]. My recognized format and idea: [paste]. Write the job description of a head of content for me (outcomes, weekly rituals, what I keep), a one-sentence big idea my industry could adopt, and a 12-month stage plan from niche podcasts to industry events and press. Flag what will fall apart if I stop posting for three months.

T3

Type 3: The Industry Face

Your whole industry, and beyond it · 100,000 to several million · team: full-time specialized team

Your content spreads outside your industry. Press and industry events invite you, and people recognize you immediately as the face of your field. A full-time team handles scripting, editing, copywriting and creative strategy, coordinated with your company's marketing, while you focus on ideas, deals and presence. You are coached by top content strategists, you post less often with far more quality, and you run many sub-accounts.

How it feels. You now have authority nobody can fake. Even if you stopped producing, people would still look for your advice. Others copy you and it does not matter: you have the moat and the track record. You may write a book, or someone may write one about you. Your company can now grow with or without you, and your marketing assets can keep creating opportunities for years.

Who sits here. Examples I would place here: Alex Hormozi, Gary Vaynerchuk, Paul Graham, Naval Ravikant. These names fit the reach of this type; how each one produces varies. Why each name sits where it does is a story for a separate post.

The trap

Your name fades behind your ideas

How to reach Type 4

Nobody plans Type 4. You can only make ideas so useful that they leave your industry and enter culture.

Steps
  1. Write the book, or the body of work, that holds your ideas without you.
  2. Take your ideas to mainstream media and to audiences that do not work in your industry.
  3. Attach your name to a public project bigger than your company.
  4. Keep quality above frequency: one piece that becomes a reference does more work than a hundred posts.
TodayList three ideas of yours that people in your industry already repeat without crediting you.

Copy this prompt into your assistant:

I am at Type 3 of the Korczowski scale. My big ideas: [paste]. Where they already spread: [industry, press, events]. T4

Type 4: The Magnate

Society, culture and politics · Many millions, across platforms and media · team: the largest and best team in your field

A worldwide, generational public figure with mainstream opportunities. You can pivot to a different industry and your audience follows you. You have a Wikipedia page, large media coverage, and your content is produced by the largest and most qualified team in your field. People study your personal brand, and politicians discuss your ideas.

How it feels. Your ideas can influence several generations of entrepreneurs. Even when your company no longer exists, people will still quote you and look for your wisdom when in doubt. This authority is very hard to remove, even if the worst happens, because your ideas stuck.

Who sits here. Examples I would place here: Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, and among thinkers Yuval Noah Harari (4.41 below). The placement measures reach, not approval. Steve Jobs died in 2011 and stays here: Type 5 starts a hundred years after death.

The trap

Being studied, copied and judged by everyone

Staying at Type 4

At this level the job is to keep the ideas alive and true, because the person is now the institution.

Steps
  1. Protect the core ideas: one sentence each, repeated for decades.
  2. Train the people and the institutions that will carry the ideas after you.
  3. Choose your fights: everything you say now moves markets, careers and policy.
TodayRead how your own ideas are summarized by people who never met you, and correct the ones that drifted.
For your AI

Copy this prompt into your assistant:

Here is how people summarize my ideas in media, books and social posts: [paste]. Compare each summary with what I actually said: [paste]. List where the idea drifted, which drift helps it spread and which one betrays it, and propose one sentence per idea I should repeat for the next ten years.

T5

Type 5: The Legend

Generations, for centuries after death · Counted in carriers, not accounts: up to billions · team: institutions that outlive them: schools, churches, codes, universities

A person whose ideas are still taught, practiced or argued about at least a hundred years after their death. People who never met them read their biography, quote them to settle an argument, live by their teaching or under the institution they founded. Their name often becomes a common word: platonic, epicurean, Napoleonic, Marxist. Followers here are carriers: the people who learn the ideas and pass them to the next generation.

How it feels. Nobody feels Type 5, because nobody is alive in it. The founder is gone and the carriers do the work, which is the purest form of the idea of this scale: ideas that travel without you. Neither the Buddha nor Jesus wrote a word that survives, and the Buddha's teachings were written down centuries after his death (Britannica). Socrates wrote nothing either. Christians were 28.8% of humanity in 2020 and Buddhists 4.1% (Pew Research Center, 2025). The decimals of Type 5 weigh two things equally: depth, the share of all humans ever born who were born after the person died, and reach, how many living people still carry the ideas. Depth counts people, not years: about 53% of the humans ever born came after Jesus, and about 14% came after 1850 (PRB, 2022).

Who sits here. Examples, scored below with the same formula: Jesus 5.79, the Buddha 5.71, Aristotle 5.60, Socrates 5.58, Plato 5.57, Karl Marx 5.45, Epicurus 5.44, Napoleon Bonaparte 5.33. Confucius belongs here too. The limit, 6.00, would be an idea carried by every one of the roughly 117 billion humans ever born (PRB). No person comes close; ideas older than any person, such as love or hate, do, and antiquity gave them a face with Eros and Ares. The placement measures how far and how long ideas travel, not whether they were right, and a religious founder is named here with the respect owed to the people who follow them.

The trap

The carriers rewrite you

What a living founder can learn from Type 5

Type 5 is granted by people born after you. What you control is whether your ideas can be carried without you.

Steps
  1. Write your ideas so a stranger can teach them: one sentence, one story, one rule each.
  2. Give each idea a name people can repeat, because a named idea outlives its author.
  3. Train carriers rather than fans: people who can explain the idea better than you in their own words.
  4. Build or join an institution that keeps the ideas alive after your company: a school, a book, an open method.
TodayWrite the one idea of yours you would want someone to quote in a hundred years, in one sentence.
For your AI

Copy this prompt into your assistant:

Here are my core ideas: [paste]. For each one, tell me if a stranger could teach it without me, give it a short name people could repeat, and write the one-sentence version, the story that carries it and the rule people would follow. Then tell me which idea has the best chance to outlive my company and why.

Why a scale

Astronomers rank civilizations by energy. Founders can be ranked by ideas.

In 1964 the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev classified civilizations by the energy they can use: a planet, a star, a galaxy (Kardashev scale). Carl Sagan later turned the types into a decimal scale and put 1970s humanity at about 0.7. The scale works because each type is a jump of many orders of magnitude, so it forces you to name what you are actually able to do.

A founder's energy is attention, and attention only compounds when ideas travel without you. That is the measure here: your head, your followers, your niche, your industry, society. Followers, views and podcast invites are symptoms that tell you which ring your ideas reached.

The business case is about trust. In the 2024 Edelman and LinkedIn study of nearly 3,500 executives, 73% of B2B decision-makers said an organization's thought leadership is a more trustworthy basis for judging its capabilities than its marketing materials, and 86% said they were likely to invite an organization that consistently produces high-quality thought leadership to an RFP (Edelman-LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Report, 2024). A Clutch survey of 408 consumers in June 2026 found that, among consumers who follow brands or executives, a founder's personal post earned more trust than the corporate account, 26% against 19% (Clutch, 2026). The market prices the climb too: in February 2026 a San Francisco company that runs content for CEOs listed a "Head of CEO Content" role at $500,000 to $1,500,000 a year (job listing).

Expect years. Mark Schaefer, interviewing nearly 100 people known in their fields, found it took two to three years on average for a personal brand to ignite (Schaefer, 2017). The types are a map of that road, so you know which work matters this quarter.

What to expect

The scale tells you where you are and what the next move is. It does not promise views or a date. Most founders who reach Type 2 got there through a system they kept for a long time, with many flat weeks in between. Type 3 needs a team and years, and nobody can plan Type 4. The thresholds are my reading of the founders I have worked with and studied, written as rough markers. The name lookup is an AI reading of public evidence: it can be wrong, and every input it used is shown so you can check it.

Questions

Personal brand levels, answered.

What are the levels of personal branding?

On the Korczowski scale there are six: Type 0, the invisible expert who has no time to post; Type 1, the grinder who posts with discipline on one platform; Type 2, the niche authority whose content brings deals, DMs and investor intros; Type 3, the face of an industry with a full-time content team; Type 4, the generational public figure whose audience follows across industries; Type 5, the legend whose ideas are still carried centuries after their death, such as the Buddha, Jesus, Socrates or Napoleon.

What is the Korczowski scale?

A scale of personal branding created by Dr. Louis Korczowski in 2026 and inspired by the Kardashev scale of civilizations. It measures how far a person's ideas travel when they are not in the room, from Type 0 to Type 5, with one continuous score from 0.00 to the limit of 6.00, computed from evidence and audience, which turns a personal brand into a measure of personal legacy.

Who reaches Type 5 of the Korczowski scale?

Only people whose ideas are still taught, practiced or argued about at least a hundred years after their death, by followers who never met them: founders of religions, schools of thought, legal systems or ways of life. On the worked examples, Jesus scores 5.79, the Buddha 5.71, Socrates 5.58 and Napoleon Bonaparte 5.33. Nobody reaches Type 5 while alive, and nobody reaches 6.00, the limit of an idea carried by every human who ever lived.

How is a Korczowski score computed?

Two readings, and the lower one wins. The evidence score is the highest type whose checks pass, plus a quarter for each check of the next type. The audience score places the audience inside the band of each type on a log scale. For Type 5, the score adds depth (the share of all humans ever born who came after the person died) and reach (living people who still carry the ideas), half a point each. The name lookup on the page shows every input it used.

How long does it take to go from Type 1 to Type 2?

Mark Schaefer, interviewing nearly 100 people known in their fields, found it took on average two to three years for a personal brand to ignite. A system shortens the learning: three months of regular posting usually gives enough data to spot a format that beats your own median, and that format is the first step of Type 2.

Do I need many followers to have a strong personal brand?

Follower counts on this scale are rough markers. The type is decided by what your ideas do: a founder with 8,000 followers who gets investor intros and deals from content behaves like a Type 2, and an account with 200,000 followers that brings nothing behaves like a Type 1.

When should a founder hire a head of content?

At Type 2, once content already brings deals and DMs and at least one format works. Before that, one editor or assistant is enough. A head of content owns the calendar, the team and the numbers so the founder only brings ideas, presence and decisions.

Version 2.0 · last updated 2026-11-04: Version 2.0: Type 5, The Legend, for people whose ideas are carried centuries after their death; one continuous score up to the limit of 6.00, from personal brand to personal legacy; a lookup that scores any public name; eleven worked examples from Jesus to Manuel Cervera-Marzal.
